Southwark joins decent homes protest

Southwark Council is the latest to express bitter disappointment at the level of decent homes funding allocated to it over the next 4 years.

Councillors say that £76m over 4 years is barely half the £148m it wanted, to keep council homes warm, safe and dry.

Figures from the Homes and Communities Agency show that Southwark will receive nothing in 2011-12.

Southwark claim that £11.2m allocated in 2012-13 may be ‘subject to further changes in housing finance rules.’

The bulk, £65m from 2013, was ‘indicative only and not a confirmed allocation.’
A spokesman for the Homes and Communities Agency said: “Funding is confirmed for the first 2 years.

“It is normal to make funding indicative in later years to check on progress and value for money,” he said.

“This is also part of the implementation of self funding.
“Local Authorities will be expected to fund the last 10% of decent homes themselves,” he said.

Councillor Ian Wingfield, cabinet member for housing in Southwark said: "This is a kick-in the teeth for our tenants.”

Southwark council is now consulting residents, but warned it would face ‘difficult choices about priorities.’

Housing Minister Grant Shapps said that £1.6bn had been set aside to improve 150,000 homes in 50 local authority areas, despite the tough economic climate.

Mr Wingfield said: “I hope ministers review this decision, otherwise we will be unable to improve our stock to a high standard."
